Surrealistic figures, Folk Art Walking Cane. France ca. 1880

This One-piece Cane carved from an unknown wood has on top of the handle a Salamander and a Cicada, both, symbolic animals of the warm summers of the French Provence.  Prominently carved, we see the faces of a king wearing his crown and an Indian crowned with feathers, there are sea animals like a turtle, and a fish with the head of an otter, a shell and a palm-three are also represented in the shaft as many animal heads carved in the knots of the wood like a fox, a monkey, a wolf etc. Most of the carved figures are etched and enhanced with a heated needle. The OL is 95 cm, without chips or cracks, the condition is excellent. Like most of the folk-art canes, this one is wearing a warm and wonderful patina.   “Hence, Canes are made by shepherds living in the countryside where stars and seasons are the only points of reference and where time does not matter; by old men sitting by the fireside on whom time has lost its grip; by soldiers waiting in the mud of trenches to go back to life or to march to death; by prisoners for whom freedom is so far away that it has become an abstraction. The cane is the work of a man uninhibited, who does not account for his time and for whom time doesn’t matter or no longer means anything” (G. Segas) Popular art canes by L. Jantzen

The hunt terrier was kept for a variety of reasons, such as rat control around stables and kennels, and to run with the hounds to flush the fox from small hiding places. * Wikipedia

A Russian Champleve enamel Cane, Moscow ca. 1890

A Russian Champleve enamel Cane, Moscow ca. 1890

Champlevé enamelling is conceived to add colour and glitter to metalwork by creating small “compartments” below the surface, which are then filled with powdered glass and other materials and heated to a fusion point in a kiln. Once the enamel has cooled, must be smoothed with pumice stone and polished. The metal lines left untouched between the troughs serve as partitions.

Used in jewellery art made during Classical Antiquity, it was only during the era of Celtic art (from about 400 BCE onwards) that the technique became consistent and widespread.

This cane is fashioned as a Montgolfier balloon and modelled in the raised enamel champleve technique with Russian patterns and coloured with turquoise blue, red, white, purple, and ultramarine-blue shadows. The elaboration detail and fineness suggest high skills. There are traces it has been gilded once. It is 7 cm high x 4 cm diameter, it bears Russian trademarks, one is the traditional Kokoshnik 48 the other is AA (assayer) Anatoly Apollonovich Artsybashev, active in Moscow from 1888 - 1898, according to the well-known silver-marks catalogue online

https://www.925-1000.com/Frussia_assay_01.html It is on top of a sound black snakewood shaft and finishing with an ivory tip, the O.L. is 91 cm, there are minimal signs of use, the condition is perfect.

A rarely encountered coloured Millefiori Murano Glass Walking Cane, Italy ca. 1900

A rarely encountered coloured Millefiori Murano Glass Walking Cane, Italy ca. 1900

Murano glass is made on the Venetian island of Murano, which has specialized in fancy glassware for centuries. Murano’s glassmakers led Europe for centuries, developing or refining many technologies including crystalline glass, enamelled glass (smalto), golden glass (goldstone), multicoloured glass (millefiori), milk glass (lattimo), and imitation gemstones made of glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these centuries-old techniques. * Wikipedia.

The 5 cm. high x 2,5 cm diameter cylindrical handle, is made of glass-paste in the Pate de Verre Murano technique. It features multiple flowers in primary and secondary colours, much like that seen in fine Italian Venetian glass 19th-century paperweights. It is on top of a hardwood shaft with a metal collar idem a horn tip. The O.L. is 97 cm. Without chips or cracks, the condition is perfect, this Cane survives intact inside a cupboard for the last 120 years.

Possible no other creature has stirred us to a more mystical communion with nature or a more abject fear of her dark realities than the wolf. Wolves are hair-raisers. Traversing the Great Distances on their slender legs and prodigious feet they appear to float, silent and spectral, like emissary spirits. *Book of Symbols.
