Totem sculpture by Jacky De Maeyer - 1971
Totem sculpture in burnt oak by the Belgian artist Jacky De Maeyer, born in 1938 in Ostend. The sculpture has an anthropomorphic form with influences from African art, and dates from 1971.
Jacky De Maeyer was born in Ostend in 1938. He has his studio in his native city and in Gordes (France). Since 1960 his work has been shown in over 300 solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, including in the United States, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Greece and Korea.
A number of monumental sculptures can be seen in different public places.
The stylised shapes evoke, on the one hand, an archaic world of signs and symbols and on the other hand, a common spirit with the cultures of Africa and Oceania.
In his oak sculptures, Jacky De Maeyer draws his inspiration from the organic world, stylising it into forms that are a synthesis between organic and geometric; ovals, pyramids, spheres are built up vertically in undulating or straight lines, either in a totemic symmetry or using an asymmetry that creates a harmonious tension.
