Totem sculpture by Jacky De Maeyer - 1971

Totem sculpture in burnt oak by the Belgian artist Jacky De Maeyer, born in 1938 in Ostend. The sculpture has an anthropomorphic form with influences from African art, and dates from 1971. Jacky De Maeyer was born in Ostend in 1938. He has his studio in his native city and in Gordes (France). Since 1960 his work has been shown in over 300 solo and group exhibitions in Belgium and abroad, including in the United States, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Greece and Korea. A number of monumental sculptures can be seen in different public places. The stylised shapes evoke, on the one hand, an archaic world of signs and symbols and on the other hand, a common spirit with the cultures of Africa and Oceania. In his oak sculptures, Jacky De Maeyer draws his inspiration from the organic world, stylising it into forms that are a synthesis between organic and geometric; ovals, pyramids, spheres are built up vertically in undulating or straight lines, either in a totemic symmetry or using an asymmetry that creates a harmonious tension.

Unique sculptural coffee table by Pia Manu

Coffee table, metal base, slate top, tin sculpture. Unique piece by the Belgian sculptor Jules Dewaele, better known as Pia Manu. As a great collector of fossils and trilobites, Pia Manu takes a fossil tin form that he superimposes on the table top in combination with slate mosaics. The base of the table is made of oxidated metal, Pia Manu treatened metals with an oxidation process to give the metal a unique texture and patina. Signed Pia Manu. Acquired directly from the artist in 1983 by the previous owner. Representative of the Flemish Brutalists. He models or sculpts primitive forms with materials of powerful texture or anti-poetic (as he calls them) using concrete, fossils, metals, glass, earth and slate.

Zulu bridal hat 'Isicholo'

Zulu bridal hat, made of natural hair and red pigments. The young girls were called ‘Itshishi’. They let their hair grow, cut it of, conserved it and worked the strings of hair around a concave frame of braided twines. Just before the wedding ceremony the completed hat was greased with fat and red ochre by the leder women of the community and was handed by them to the groom. During the festivity he handed over to his new bride the hat, made of her own hair. Early 20th century.

Shield Sukuma people Tanzania

Sukuma shield, early 20th century, Tanzania. These shields are made of thick buffalo hide with side indentations, a raised boss in the center with wood handle and leather bindings. The shields were carried by Niatura warriors used for defense.and also as a symbolic ritual object. Provenance: collection of Ann De Pauw and Luc Huysveld.

Pende mask Congo

Authentic Pende mask from Democratic Republic of the Congo. Panya ngombe, the anthropo-zoomorphic face with elongated slit eyes, short overhanging forehead, slender nose, and carved, rectangular mouth. Triangular designs around periphery. Provenance: early 20th century Republic of Congo, collection Ann De Pauw and Luc Huysveld.

Wooden sacrificial pole figure Fon

Wooden pole figure, dark sacrificial patina of mainly oil. Kudio type of Bochio, also called “guardians” are thin pole-like figures. They function as a sort of “lightning conductor” , as the figure is meant to be a substitute for the living person. The figure must attract evil forces and so spare its owner(s). The patina of oil and blood refers to the fact that this bochio protected a shrine as only Vodun priests may use that kind of offerings. Provenance: 19th to early 20th century, Fon people, Republic of Benin, collected by Ann De Pauw and Luc Huysveld

This collection was acquired in collaboration with @igmarstuer (Aalst - Belgium) and @pschantiques (marché Paul Bert , Paris Saint-Ouen) We present here one of the two largest sculptures from his workshop. Simplifying forms to the extreme, Roland LAVIANNE develops a powerful play of volumes, shapes and lines, using light as a building material. Roland LAVIANNE translates a real mastery of the balance of volumes and lines of force, the characters, motionless and dynamic, seem to weave a theatrical conversation forever suspended.
